More than two-thirds of the chicken in grocery stores contains antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can cause illness and even death, according to a report from Consumer Reports magazine. The report analyzed 382 fresh, whole broiler chickens bought in more than 100 stores from 22 states across the country. Sixty-two percent of the chickens contained campylobacter, 14 percent contained salmonella, and 9 percent contained both. These pathogens are the leading bacterial causes of foodborne illness and infect roughly 3.4 million people in the US each year. Chickens from Tyson and Foster Farms were the most infected; more than 80 percent of their samples contained at least one of the pathogens.
