Chris Wilkins, the co-founder of the barbecue enthusiast group Texas BBQ Posse, recently wrote about his six-week venture into veganism for The Dallas Morning News. Wilkins and his wife made the decision to abstain from animal products after chatting with a fellow barbecue enthusiast who was able to get off his heart medications with the help of a plant-based diet. Wilkins’ month-and-a-half dietary trial allowed him to discover vegan restaurants such as the Spiral Diner in Dallas and the Loving Hut in Addison, TX.; he learned to buy affordable healthy foods at Trader Joe’s and Sprouts, and he expanded his culinary horizons, experimenting with beans and grilled tofu. Wilkins lost 15 pounds within the six-week period, and while he will not remain a strict vegan, he notes that he is now much more reluctant to indulge in barbecue.
