Earlier this month, San Diego-based vegan brand Maya’s Cookies launched “The Obama,” a limited-edition cookie tribute to former First Lady Michelle Obama. Brand owner Maya Madsen veganized the winning recipe Obama submitted during the Presidential Cookie Bake-Off to create the decadent cookie which includes semi-sweet chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, mint chocolate chips, and walnuts. The Obama is part of the Maya’s Cookies brand refresh as part of its fifth anniversary, which includes a new logo, website, and a new cookie collection inspired by s’mores. The four new cookies in the collection are: Chocolate Chip S’mores; Oatmeal Chocolate Chip S’mores; Marble Fudge S’mores; and White Chocolate Espresso S’mores.

“As a formal fitness model and personal trainer with a sweet tooth, I set out to create what I could not find; a delicious, crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside gourmet vegan cookie,” Madsen said. “Five years ago, I could never have imagined that we’d be where we are today. It’s humbling to see what is possible with hard work and a commitment to quality and community. This new look represents that growth and evolution.”

In the weeks following the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement this year, Maya’s Cookies experienced a 10,000-percent increase in sales, helping the company recover from difficulties during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
