Broccoli to the Rescue

British scientists discover a chemical in broccoli that can help protect your heart.

It turns out that broccoli might be the most heart-healthy vegetable. Researchers at Imperial College London learned that a compound called sulforaphane, which has its highest levels in broccoli, might help prevent clogged arteries and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. The chemical, which is also found in cauliflower and cabbage, activates a protective protein that is dormant in susceptible areas of the arteries. Scientists must continue their research to see if eating veggies is as effective as sulforaphane on its own, but it can’t hurt to break out the broccoli if you want to keep your arteries free and clear.
