International fast-food chain Burger King will add two new meatless options to its locations across Europe. Jose Cil, the chief executive of Burger King’s parent company Restaurant Brands International, told Bloomberg that the chain will expand its plant-based options but is not currently disclosing further details of the launch. In April, Burger King began its plant-based menu update by debuting the Impossible Whopper at 59 locations in St. Louis, MO, where the successful trail of the plant-based burger (ordered vegan by omitting the mayonnaise) generated 18.5 percent more foot traffic to locations that offered the Impossible Whopper. On August 8, Burger King expanded the Impossible Whopper to its more than 7,000 locations nationwide—a move that helped boost the company’s profits as outlined in its 2019 third-quarter earnings report. Two months earlier, Burger King began testing the European market by partnering with vegan brand Vivera to introduce the Rebel Whopper and Rebel Chicken King (both ordered vegan by omitting the mayonnaise) in Sweden. In addition to Europe and the United States, Burger King is also expanding its plant-based options to South America. In September, the chain launched the Rebel Whopper at 58 test locations in São Paulo, Brazil, a plant-based burger made in partnership with Marfrig Global Foods SA—the world’s largest producer of animal-based hamburgers.
