On July 5, Governor Schwarzenegger signed into law A.B. 1437, a bill that extends Proposition 2 to include hens in the production of all eggs sold in California for consumption, including those brought in from other states. Prop. 2 was the landmark California law that voters passed in November 2008 that made it a requirement for farm animals to be able to move relatively freely without coming into contact with one another or the sides of a cage. The Humane Society of the United States has applauded the law, which like Prop. 2 will come into effect January 2015, saying, “California will become a cage-free state.”
