A “small, but growing” number of Chinese citizens have turned to vegetarianism, according to a recent article from The National. A recent slew of food scandals in the world’s most populous country, in addition to religious, environmental, and health reasons, have turned many Chinese citizens away from meat. While meat consumption in the nation has risen substantially as China has become more affluent, big cities such as Beijing have seen a steep rise in veg restaurant openings—according to the article, China’s capital has more than 100 veg restaurants, up from around 10 a decade ago.
