China to Phase Out Cosmetics Testing on Animals

According to Humane Society International, “non-special use” cosmetics such as shampoo or perfume that are made in China will no longer have to be sent to the government for animal testing before they are accessible to consumers. Instead, companies can use non-animal tests that are approved in the European Union, or for cosmetics that contain raw ingredients, companies can rely on already-existing consumer-safety information. This policy change will help spare the lives and alleviate the suffering of many of the 30,000 rabbits, mice, and other animals that the HSI approximates are used for cosmetics testing in China annually.
