The Daily Show recently interviewed a Mercy For Animals and The Humane Society of the United States activist who shot undercover footage of a slaughterhouse employee beating cows with a wrench. Cody Carlson, the activist interviewed in the segment, says the meat industry is incapable of self-regulation and attempts to silence whistleblowers because it has much to hide. The news show––known for its sarcastic, humorous social commentary––featured comedian Al Madrigal questioning Emily Meredith from the Animal Agriculture Alliance on what she says are standard industry practices filmed out of context or skewed by organizations. “So let me get this straight,” he asks, “you’re protecting the animals from the people who are trying to protect the animals?”
