Creator of Word “Vegan” Honored Every September 2

Donald Watson, who—along with his wife, Dorothy, created the word “vegan” 70 years ago in England—would have turned 104 this week. Born September 2, 1910, Watson is also the founder of The Vegan Society, an organization that fueled an international movement at a time when factory farming was just beginning to surface. Going vegetarian at age 14 and then vegan 20 years later, he passed away at the age of 95. Every year, The Vegan Society commemorates Watson’s birthday to celebrate his vital contributions to veganism.
