A recent feature written by Matthew Ruscigno in nutrition industry magazine Today’s Dietitian spotlighted the benefits of peas, predicting they will gain popularity in the American diet in coming years. Ruscigno focused on the numerous health benefits of peas, including nutrient density as well as phytochemical and protein content, while also pointing out the innovative ways sustainably-minded food companies are using the ingredient to create dairy-free milks, vegan meats, and plant-based protein powders. The article cited consumers’ desire for safe and healthful protein sources as the driver behind the quickly expanding alternative-protein market, and commended companies such as Hampton Creek, Beyond Meat, and Ripple Foods for producing more eco-friendly, plant-based food products to meet this demand. According to a report by research company Market and Markets, the pea protein market is predicted to grow 12 percent to $18.5 million in the next 5 years.
