International pizza chain Domino’s launched this week a cheesy vegan garlic bread (AUS $6.95/USD $5.19) at its Australian outposts. The new menu item features vegan cheese by United States-based brand Follow Your Heart and was added to the menu after Domino’s Australia gauged overwhelming demand from its customers for plant-based options. “We know that garlic bread has been a staple for our vegan customers for a while now,” Domino’s Australia teased on Facebook in April. “Should a vegan cheesy garlic bread make it to our menu?” Fans responded with a resounding “yes,” which helped to determine demand for the new item—a tactic it initially used to add vegan cheese, featured in three limited-edition vegan pizzas, to its menu in January. “We’ve had great support and engagement from the vegan community on our dedicated Facebook group for vegan cheese enthusiasts,” Domino’s Australia and New Zealand CEO Nick Knight said, “and have been seeing lots of suggestions that we should create a vegan-friendly alternative to our cheesy garlic bread.” In the Netherlands and Belgium, Domino’s partnered with the Dutch Vegan Society earlier this year to reformulate its crust to be fully vegan by removing whey and developed its own line of plant-based pizzas.
