Minneapolis, MN-based Drake’s Organic Spirits recently announced that it has met the standards for vegan certification by the Vegan Awareness Foundation, a globally recognized trademark for goods that do not contain animal products or byproducts and that have not been tested on animals. Drake’s—which produces a range of rum and vodka beverages—is the first spirit company to become certified vegan, organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, and kosher. “Drake’s Organic Spirits is committed to providing a premium drinking experience that is also healthier, eco-friendly, and ethical,” Drake’s founder and CEO Mark Anderson said. “We’re thrilled to be certified by the highly respected Vegan Awareness Foundation.” While many consumers assume alcohol is naturally vegan, hidden animal derivatives can be found in beverages or used in their filtration process, such as albumen (egg white), albumin (egg or dried blood), carmine (insects), casein or lactose (milk), charcoal (animal bone), chitin (shellfish), gelatin (connective tissue from cows or pigs), honey, isinglass (fish bladder membranes), and pepsin (digestive enzymes from pigs). Drake’s uses a coconut fiber filtration process that ensures no animals are used as ingredients or in the production of its alcohol. A portion of proceeds from the sale of Drake’s products goes to animal rescue foundation Long Lake Animal Rescue.
