On Wednesday, 438 (out of 687) members of the European Parliament voted to stop the $110 million agricultural subsidy paid annually to Spain for raising bulls for bullfighting. The cruel activity is banned in certain parts of Spain and has seen such a decline in attendance recently that in August the town of Villafranca de los Caballeros used its subsidy for books instead of bulls. According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, “Government handouts are the only thing keeping this cruel ‘tradition’ alive.”
