A poisoned school lunch has killed three children and sickened 89 other children and five adults in Peru. The meal of rice and fish was donated by the National Food Assistance Program to the school in Redondo, about 470 miles northwest of Lima. Due to the discovery of “carbonate intoxication” of the children, officials suspect that the food was accidentally prepared in a container that previously held rat poison. In 1999, a similar case occurred in Cuzco, Peru, when pesticide-contaminated food killed 24 children.
