Global cosmetics brand Garnier is officially certified cruelty-free under the Cruelty Free International Leaping Bunny program. The globally recognized Leaping Bunny program has certified more than 2,000 cosmetics, personal care, and cleaning brands around the world. Garnier—which includes a portfolio of brands such as Nurtrisse, Fructis, Olia, Color Sensation, SkinActive, and Whole Blends—is one of the largest global brands to obtain the gold standard approval of the program. The certification means that Garnier can now label its products with the Leaping Bunny symbol, which lets consumers know they have not been tested on animals.

Cruelty-free certification

The process to certify any brand as cruelty-free requires an extensive investigation of the entire supply chain, including all raw materials and individual ingredients, for any cases of animal testing. Approval must be given of all the brand’s finished products. For Garnier, this meant securing evidence from more than 500 suppliers who source more than 3,000 ingredients. The beauty brand has also ceased sales of its products in mainland China, which requires mandatory animal testing for certain cosmetic products.

“Garnier is a global brand familiar to us all. To work with them to help end animal testing for cosmetics and declare them officially approved under the Cruelty Free International Leaping Bunny Program is a real milestone,” Michelle Thew, Cruelty Free International CEO, said. “It has taken many months, but Garnier has diligently reviewed every supplier and source and we are completely confident with the results.”

Does cruelty-free mean vegan?

Though brands such as Garnier are making a commitment to end animal testing on their products, the certification does not mean the products are vegan. A vegan product is one that does not contain animal products, and a cruelty-free product is one that has not been tested on animals. Garnier currently offers formulas that are labeled vegan, as well as product lines such as skin-care line Green Labs and hair-care line Fructis that are vegan.

Garnier’s parent company, L’Oreal, continues to test on animals when required by law.
