International furniture chain IKEA will add plant-based soft-serve to the menu of its in-store cafés next summer. “100 percent plant-based; 100 percent delicious,” IKEA announced on Instagram. “Today, we are sharing our ambitions to introduce plant-based ice cream to the IKEA Bistro. The development has started and we aim to bring this alternative to dairy-based soft ice to IKEA Bistros in Summer 2019.” Earlier this year, IKEA tested a plant-based hot dog option at one location in Sweden. After the new vegan item received a 95-percent customer approval rating, the brand announced its expansion across European locations. Stateside, IKEA debuted the vegan hot dog—topped with pickled red cabbage, spicy mustard, and roasted onions—at the Boston Calling Festival last month and plans to introduce it to its bistro locations in the United States this fall.
