On July 5, vegan race car champion Lewis Hamilton will wear black overalls and drive a black car emblazoned with the message “End Racism” during his first race after the COVID-19 lockdown began in March at the Austrian Grand Prix 2020. Hamilton—the only Black driver in Formula One history—spoke to reporters this week about how he expects the racing community to come together in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, which might come in the form of kneeling before Sunday’s race.

“I think it’s really important that we remain united or become united in this sport,” Hamilton said. “Our voices are powerful and if we bring them together collectively we can have a huge impact. It’s the first race. Already as a team we have shown quite a big acknowledgement of where we are in society today and that we are not standing still, we are moving ahead. We will, I’m sure, as drivers all stand to represent something.”
