Manchester Gets Its First Vegan Junk Food Joint

Vegan fast food eatery Zad’s Kitchen opened this month in Manchester, England—the first of its kind, according to vegan authority The Vegan Society. The menu at Zad’s features vegan pizzas (made with dairy-free cheese and seitan-based meats), burgers featuring smokey tempeh, and sides such as nuggets and cupcakes for dessert. Zad’s owners plan to “fill a gap which exists in the Manchester fast-food market,” which they identify as “the need for quick, tasty, and conscious meals, which don’t cost the earth, whichever way you spin it.” Zad’s joins a number of newly opened eateries—including Temple of Hackney (also known as Temple of Seitan), the world’s only all-vegan fried chicken shop—serving a growing vegan population in the United Kingdom. Last year, The Vegan Society determined that the vegan population in the UK has increased by 360 since 2006.
