Mayim Bialik, who stars in the network television show, The Big Bang Theory, recently asked her fellow Jewish followers to alter the traditional practice of kaparos during this year’s Yom Kippur holiday. “Wave money, not chickens,” posted Bialik on her Facebook in reference to the Kaparos practice, which involves swinging a chicken above one’s head as a means of atonement. The actress also posted a Youtube video of a Los Angeles-based Rabbi who opposed the traditional kaparos practice, and brought up the compassionate, kosher animal-welfare laws that are violated by present-day farming practices due to the inhumane ways that chickens are raised.
