In a recent interview with Australian-based media outlet Herald Sun, musician Shaffer Chimere Smith (known professionally as “Ne-Yo”) discussed his recent decision to adopt a vegan diet. The musician announced last week via a Facebook video that he ditched animal products after watching vegan documentary What the Health. “I was running from it for a long time,” Smith said, “but the second I watched it, I instantly ran to [the] refrigerator and threw out all the deli meats. I can’t know what I know and still eat that stuff. I just can’t.” While Smith said it is not easy for him to make the transition, he vowed to stick with his decision to adopt a vegan diet. “Meat literally makes you sick,” Smith said. “It’s harder for me because I’m not really a fruit and vegetables kind [of] guy. I never have been, even from childhood, but I gotta do what I gotta do.” What the Health—which debuted on Netflix in June—has had a massive impact on viewers, prompting everyone from celebrities to groups of NFL players to adopt a vegan diet.
