New Supermarket Resells Surplus Food

Daily Table, a new concept store in Boston launched by former Trader Joe’s President Doug Rauch, aims to dramatically reduce food waste by reselling aging produce, items approaching their sell-by date, and other products donated by wholesalers and markets. Customers pay cheaper prices for still-good produce with potatoes at only 49 cents per pound, bananas at 29 cents per pound, and canned green beans at two for $1. To further reduce waste, the market implemented a prepared-foods section that utilizes harder-to-sell donated items (such as wilting kale) to create sellable dishes such as stir-frys. While Trader Joe’s does not currently donate to Daily Table, Rauch plans to get their products in the store eventually. Cheap, old Speculoos Cookie Butter, here we come!
