New vegan butcher shop Real Fake Meats will open in Halifax, Nova Scotia by the end of December as the first of its kind on the east coast of Canada. In May, former Top Chef Canada contestant Lauren Marshall launched the company with friend Brandon Levesque as a meat subscription box service, with products selling out within 48 hours of their opening. Real Fake Meats is accepting holiday orders for pick up while the company prepares to open the new storefront—which will offer a variety of plant-based meats and cheeses. Holiday boxes include items such as Apple Sage Bacon Stuffing, Veggie Turkey Cutlets, Coconut Bacon Brussels Sprouts, Roasted Leek Gravy, and Cranberry Cashew Cheesecake. Marshall explained to VegNews that the company name was inspired by an episode of animated show Rick and Morty. “We also love it because we are using real ingredients, so it has layers of meaning,” chef Marshall said. “Real ingredients, fake meat, real food; we just love it.”
