The Norwegian army will now participate in Meatless Mondays in an effort to combat climate change and bolster the health of its troops, reports French media source AFP. “It’s a step to protect our climate,” army spokesman Eystein Kvarving told the news outlet. “The idea is to serve food that’s respectful of the environment.” The dietary campaign has already been introduced at one of the army’s bases and will be utilized by all its troops, including those overseas. According to a Norwegian environmental group The Future in Our Hands, a typical Norwegian citizen consumes more than 1,200 animals throughout his or her life. Meatless Mondays was started in 2003 at Johns Hopkins University; since its conception, it has been embraced by schools, workplaces, and political leaders throughout the world.
