slaughterhouse will spend the rest of his life safe at an animal sanctuary. Mike Stura, operator of Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue in New Jersey, said he immediately hooked up his trailer and headed to Queens, where the runaway cow was being held. The cow made headlines when she lead police on a 30-minute chase through the streets of New York City after escaping from the Jamaica-Archer Live Poultry and Meat Market yesterday. A family who wanted to butcher the cow for meat had initially claimed the animal, but Stura pleaded with the slaughterhouse manager, saying, “I’d like to give the animal a good life.” The cow, who Stura named Freddie, is currently being seen by a veterinarian and will join Stura’s 18 other cows at Skylands in about two weeks, he says.
