PETA Target BP

This week, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are asking Gulf Coast attorneys general to launch a criminal investigation against oil spill behemoth BP based on state animal cruelty charges. In a letter released to the attorneys general of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, the group asserts that BP acted recklessly at the cost of animal suffering and death, which under Louisiana law is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both, for each animal hurt or killed. With deaths of seabirds, fish, turtles, dolphins, and other wildlife mounting every day, PETA hopes that BP executives would face significant jail time.
