Salmonella and superbugs are not the only factory-farm dangers to worry about. Steven Wing, associate professor at the University of North Carolina, found that air pollutants emitted from a pig farm affected the lung function of residents living nearby. The study, published in the journal Epidemiology, found that symptoms such as sore throat, chest tightness, and nausea worsened with increased exposure to the air outside participants’ homes, which contains, according to Wing, “dust and particles from dried feces, as well as spraying of waste that aerosolizes that material.” Symptoms increased in just 10 minutes of air exposure.
