Reader’s Digest Promotes Switching to Vegan Skincare

The nearly 100-year-old publication asks readers to consider using cruelty-free beauty products even if adopting a vegan diet is not in the cards.

A recent feature in 95-year-old publication Reader’s Digest focused on vegan skincare products. Writer Aubrey Almanza first explained the difference between vegan beauty products and those labeled as “cruelty-free”—or products not tested on animals that contain ingredients such as milk, honey, and beeswax—before turning to beauty industry experts for insight on the growing trend of vegan skincare. Avalon Organics brand manager Sohana Samanta revealed that shoppers are choosing vegan beauty products to be more in line with their ethical beliefs. “Consumers are increasingly aware of the effects the products they use have on their bodies,” Samanta said, “and the impact made on animals and the environment around them.” Almanza also received input from medical professionals, all of which agreed that vegan skincare is superior. “People are more educated and savvy about ingredients these days, and with access to infinite information, that is no surprise,” NYC dermatologist Dennis Gross told Almanza. “Wellness and health are in. It’s not a passing trend, and, as a doctor, I hope it’s here to stay.”
