Sales of meat alternatives in restaurants have increased by 268 percent from 2018 to 2019 (compared to a 21.7 percent increase in the year prior), according to a recent analysis by food industry organization Dining Alliance. The report described the emerging plant-based meat industry as “hotter than the kitchen grill,” finding that the number of restaurants serving a meat alternative has increased by 26.4 percent from 2017 to 2019. Dining Alliance President Christina Donohue explained that the popularity of meat alternatives is due to three factors: plant-based meat products, such as the Beyond Burger and Impossible Burger, are better meat alternatives than were previously available; restaurants have realized that customers seeking meatless meals crave more than a side salad; and the premium price of meat alternatives creates a lucrative opportunity for restaurant owners. “With all the buzz around these products right now, the timing is perfect to ride the wave and attract guests who are specifically looking to test out alternative meat options.”
