Ryan Gosling: Close Gestation Crate Ban Loophole

Actor Ryan Gosling has spoken up about animal welfare before, from the cruelty behind dehorning cows to the inhumane treatment of chickens, and in his latest move, Gosling penned an op-ed for The Globe and Mail––“A Tiny Cage Is Not a Life”––about a loophole that still allows farmers to cage pigs in gestation crates for periods of nearly five weeks despite the recent ban passed by Canada’s National Farm Animal Care Council. In his essay, Gosling describes the level of intelligence animals possess, particularly pigs, likening farm animals to his much-loved dog, George. “While NFACC’s progress is important and laudable, there is a major loophole in the code that I hope will be closed,” the Canadian actor writes.
