Lewis Hamilton is rarely out of the headlines. Whether it’s his impressive sporting achievements—he has no fewer than seven Formula One World Championship titles—his career moves (including his switch from Mercedes to Ferrari), or his dating life, the racing driver frequently garners attention.

But often, Hamilton uses that spotlight for good. He has his own charitable foundation, Mission 44, which aims to support young people from underrepresented groups in building careers in STEM. He’s also a huge animal lover and has been vegan since 2017 after watching What the Health for the first time.

Since then, Hamilton has made it his mission to raise awareness of plant-based diets, the issues surrounding meat consumption, and animal rights. Here are some of the ways he has helped propel the movement forward—whether through fashion, pet food, burgers, or simply using his social media platforms to advocate for change.

Of course, Hamilton’s social media feeds are full of Formula One content, along with modeling shots and photos with friends and family, but he also gives plenty of airtime to veganism.

After winning his seventh Formula One World Drivers’ Championship title in 2020, Lewis Hamilton used the spotlight to raise awareness about plant-based diets. “The horrifying things that are happening to animals in order for you to keep eating meat is inhuman,” he captioned a video showing pigs heading to slaughter. “If we can let go of our desires and think of the impact we’re having, maybe with some compassion, together we can help stop this by starving the industry that’s supplying [meat]. It is those of us that eat animal products that are complicit with this happening. Please don’t turn a blind eye, please don’t ignore it. Go plant-based.”

In 2021, after sharing a BBC article about a slaughterhouse worker in the UK, he again urged his followers to reconsider their choices, writing on Instagram: “Those of you that eat meat, please take a moment to think. Please stop eating meat. We have to end this horrific atrocity.”

Hamilton is a devoted animal lover, and his late dog, Roscoe, was the apple of his eye. After Roscoe struggled with numerous health issues throughout his life, Hamilton transitioned him to a vegan diet and noticed he seemed healthier and more energized. “I’m always looking for ways to look after his health and really just improve his quality of life, and his diet is just one part of that,” he told People in 2024. “But he has so much more energy and doesn’t struggle as much with the health issues he had before.”

Because of the impact that plant-based food had on Roscoe, Hamilton even invested in the plant-based dog food brand, Bramble, in 2024. Roscoe even got an honorary position as the company’s Chief Taste Officer.

“This extends beyond a traditional investment for me, as this is a space I care deeply about and am excited to support,” said Hamilton. “As someone who’s continuously looking to improve my health and find the right food to keep my energy levels up, I think we should look to do the same for our pets, and I want to give Roscoe the best ingredients to keep him healthy and active. Bramble ticked all the boxes for me.”

4 He told Sean Evans to offer more vegan wings on ‘Hot Ones’

In May 2024, Hamilton appeared on the hugely popular YouTube series Hot Ones, which sees host Sean Evans fire interview questions at guests while they eat progressively spicier wings. Hamilton managed to make it all the way to the hottest level on the show while eating vegan wings. He even took the opportunity to suggest that Evans offer the vegan option as the default. “You should serve the vegan wings,” he said. “It would save so many chickens.”
