India-based spirulina startup Prolgae recently developed spirulina-based vegan treats in the form of chocolate cookies and bars. Spirulina, a nutrient-dense algae, is considered a superfood due to its high level of antioxidants, B vitamins, iron, copper, and manganese. It became popular among health and fitness enthusiasts after it was successfully used by NASA as a dietary supplement for astronauts on space missions. Prolagae currently supplies its spirulina ingredient to food and nutraceutical markets in Europe and the United States but plans to expand its operations to include food products such as superfood snacks in an effort to make spirulina accessible to mainstream markets. Prolgae founder Aakas Sadasivam that developing plant-based treats was a natural fit for the superfood company. “We have a noble cause to fight against malnutrition and give healthy foods to all,” Aakas told Food Navigator. “We thought” ‘Why can’t we change the culture of chocolate [and] cookies?’ We planned that our chocolate and cookies should be organic and vegan.”
