Sustainable Palm Oil
Major food retailers differ on whether they will use eco-friendly palm oil.

Nestlé and Marks and Spencer have both announced that by 2015, the only palm oil in their products will be Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO). The deforestation necessary to produce conventional palm oil threatens the habitats of endangered species and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, while the production of CSPO must meet guidelines that ensure valuable forests are protected and environmental safeguards are met. According to a report from the World Wildlife Fund, most European retailers are not buying the more expensive, earth-friendly oil. The report ranks several companies that purchase palm oil according to how sustainable their practices are.
