International chain Taco Bell recently added oat-based vegan meat to its menus in select European locations. The chain first tested the “Oatrageous Taco”—a crunchy taco made with plant-based meat crafted from oats and legume and topped with shredded lettuce, dairy cheese, creamy chipotle sauce—at its locations in Finland before expanding the option to Spain. In 2020, Taco Bell plans to launch the plant-based meat option across Europe. The chain is known for its fully customizable menu and vegetarian options in the United States. Earlier this year, it announced that it would abstain from adding a plant-based meat option made by companies such as Impossible Foods or Beyond Meat, instead opting to curate its meatless options into a more prominent vegetarian menu. However, during a media event in California, Steven Gomez, Taco Bell’s Director of International Product Development, teased that US locations of Taco Bell may be next. “Never say never,” Gomez said about the possibility of expanding the oat-based meat option to Taco Bell’s 7,000 domestic locations.
