Sun, sand, and avocados … sounds like the perfect combination to welcome those early summer days. San Diego’s second annual Avolution Festival celebrates good vibes and free guac accompanied by live music, avocado art installations, and a lively beach town party. While not an entirely vegan event (yes, we’re surprised, too), four of the food trucks will offer vegan options featuring avocado in every way imaginable. Get there early—the first 400 attendees get a free avocado!
Tacos are hands down the ultimate festival food. Get in line early for the fried avocado tacos at this otherwise meat-heavy taco truck. Made with avocado oil-fried avocados and a vegan Chosen Foods chipotle ranch, these creamy, spicy, indulgent handholds are the perfect bite to kick off your festival experience.
Grab your obligatory chips and guac here (because no celebration of avocados is complete without this staple snack). While the truck’s logo features an assortment of vegetables, the menu is ironically (and disappointingly) animal product-heavy. Avoid the House Chips with Avolution Dip; the dip is dairy-based (sad, we know). However, the company (almost) redeems itself with Avocado Eggrolls. These crispy bites are made with avocado, sundried tomatoes, red onions, and cilantro, all fried in a perfectly golden egg-free wrap. Note: order without the dipping sauce, which contains dairy.
The most vegan-friendly of the food trucks, this mobile eatery offers a “Good vs Evil” menu. No surprise, the “Good” side offers the vegan options. Off this menu, opt for the Sweet Potato Rolled Tacos or the Squash and Black Bean Burrito—both include the truck’s signature housemade vegan kimchi and pair well with generous scoops of guacamole. The festival special—Avocado Salad with cucumber, tomatoes, and onions tossed in a lemon garlic dressing— is also vegan-friendly.
This food truck delivers on all of your Mediterranean snack cravings. The standard menu offers the classic hummus, pita, and crispy fried falafel in addition to sweet potato fries, grilled vegetables over rice, and Greek salad (ask for no feta). Just for the festival, the truck will also serve an Avocado Eggplant Wrap with Avocado Tahini, but the company has yet to confirm if this item is vegan-approved. Best ask before you order.
5. Best Beverage & Towne Park Brew Company
When you’ve had your fill of food, stop by one of these beverage purveyors to drink your avocado. The green libations of Best Beverage include a Spicy Avocado Margarita made with Blanco Tequila, avocado, lime, jalapeño, and sea salt; and the Green Goddess Lemonade—which is not for the kiddos. This adult avocado refresher includes vodka, Chareau Aloe Liqueur, lemonade, and yes, even more avocado. Those looking for a more traditional drink can opt for Towne Park Brew’s AvoFest exclusive Mexican Lager–while the beer does not contain avocado, the can features half a Hass. Think of it as a festival souvenir.
The Avolution Fest will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at San Diego’s Broadway Pier. Tickets are available online.
