A new report by market research firm Euromonitor International predicted that, by 2022, the United States will no longer be the top consumer of dairy products. “Americans are drinking less milk and are becoming wary of flavored milk drinks,” Euromonitor International Senior Food Analyst Pinar Hosafci said, “which they perceive to be unhealthy due to their high sugar content.” The decline in American dairy consumption—currently at approximately 21 percent of the global market share—is coupled with the growth of the plant-based milk industry, which is predicted to increase to $35 billion by 2024. Unfortunately, the same report predicts a rise in the consumption of dairy products in countries such as India and China, where traditional diets have historically been low in dairy products.
