This month, footwear brand Vegetarian Shoes released the Airseal Vegan space boot in honor of the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. The shoe—available in white or silver—is a replica of the original, non-vegan Hawkins Astronaut Boot worn by the Mercury Seven during their space mission in 1959. The Hawkins factory closed in 1995 and patterns for the iconic boot were inherited by a neighboring factory in England that produces footwear for Vegetarian Shoes. “For 28 years we have been producing shoes and boots without the need for any animal products, and the chance to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the lunar landings with our very own vegan astronaut boots launch was simply too much of a fun and unique opportunity to miss,” Vegetarian Shoes Founder Robin Webb told VegNews. The unisex boot (£129.95/$163.43) is made from high-tech, breathable, water-resistant, leather-free microfiber materials in worker-friendly facilities and is available for shipping worldwide through Vegetarian Shoes.
