United Kingdom-based supermarket chain Sainsbury’s announced this week a new “by Sainsbury’s” plant-based line. The new line includes Sweet & Smokey BBQ Pulled Jackfruit that Sainsbury’s recommends to be used in tacos or on top of burgers, Cauliflower Steaks that come with a Chimichurri marinade, and Indian-inspired Cauli Burgers. The line’s Mushroom Mince (or ground meatless meat), Caramelised Onion Shroomdogs, and Cumberland Shroomdogs are all made with “ugly” mushrooms in an effort to reduce food waste. “With over a quarter of meat-eating Brits actively reducing their meat consumption,” Sainsbury’s product developer Georgina Lunn said, “there is a clear appetite for exciting and new ways to introduce more vegetables into our lives. Sainsbury’s new range of plant-based products provide innovative, inspirational solutions for everyday meals … we’re really proud to be offering a wide choice of flavors and can’t wait to hear how our customers are using them.” In addition to a number of new plant-based products, Sainsbury’s debuted a private-labeled vegan cheese line in 2016, which surpassed its expected sales by 300 percent.
