Vegan Beauty Brand Is Going Plastic-Free to Save Marine Animals

After realizing that plastic pollution kills more than 100 million marine animals each year, Alpine Provisions decided to create plastic-free packaging—and hopes the beauty industry will follow.

Plant-based beauty brand Alpine Provisions is switching over all of its products to plastic-free packaging in an effort to support the plastic-free movement and inspire the body care industry to do the same. The company has created prototypes of aluminum body care bottles, paper deodorant tubes, paper lip balm tubes, and paper bar soap wraps. According to Alpine, aluminum is the most recycled material on earth because it can be recycled an infinite number of times, and since it is so lightweight, shipping aluminum saves millions of pounds of carbon emissions each year. Paper as an alternative material is also more sustainable because, on average, five trees are planted for every tree harvested.

“I’ve been plant-based since 1997 for animal-welfare reasons, when I read that plastic pollution kills over 100 million marine animals a year I knew I had to make the change,” Alpine Provisions founder Joshua Onysko told VegNews. “It took 14 months and a lot of testing and design work, but we are proud to be going plastic-free this summer. We are excited to be where we are but we all must do this together. I want us all to realize a life after plastic.”

Alpine is currently hosting a crowdfunding campaign to support its plastic-free launch, and it has so far raised nearly $50,000. As part of the campaign, Alpine has created a “Lather it Forward” pledge that makes essential cleaning “community packs,” which include hand sanitizer, hand soap, and all-purpose soap and are made available to those most financially impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.
