Vegan kebab shop What The Pitta recently won the title of Best Takeaway in London in the 8th annual British Kebab Awards, an annual celebration of kebab restaurants across the United Kingdom. Last month, What The Pitta was chosen as one of the 150 finalists based on the number of public votes it received. London Mayor Sadiq Khan presented co-founders Cem Yildiz and Rojdan Gul with their prize in front of an audience of 1,200 with guests. This is the first time a vegan restaurant has won at the awards. “To win at the Kebab Awards is a huge statement for veganism and just how far it has come,” Yildiz told media outlet Plant Based News. “We were laughed at when we decided to create London’s first exclusively vegan kebab shop just over three years ago, and now we’ve taken center stage with our vegan spin on the British classic kebab.” What The Pitta opened its flagship location in 2017 and has since expanded to three more outposts with another scheduled to open in May.
