This weekend, vegan comedian Tig Notaro attended a victory party brunch hosted by medical group Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). The event was hosted at film producer James Costa’s Hollywood Hills home in Los Angeles to celebrate the recent passage of California’s Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act. During the event—which featured a number of vegan activists, including PCRM founder Neal Barnard, MD, actor Dylan McDermott, and Olympian Dotsie Bauch—Notaro expressed that eschewing animal products is an important political move. “Having a plant-based diet is the number-one issue,” Notaro said. “No other politics matter if you don’t take care of that.” Notaro was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 and lived with chronic pain after undergoing a double mastectomy. Last year, the comedian, along with her wife Stephanie Allynne, adopted a plant-based diet and said that she has since lived relatively pain-free.
