This week, vegan meal delivery brand Purple Carrot will donate $40,000 to Black Lives Matter (BLM) in support of the organization’s work to dismantle systemic racism. Founder and CEO Andy Levitt explained that the donation is “a place to start” for Purple Carrot and that the company will continue to educate its employees about how to work toward making a positive difference in the realm of social justice. “Since I started this company in fall of 2014, I always hoped to create a business that can be a force of good in the world, to help people eat more plant-based foods and make a positive impact on our health and the health of our environment,” Levitt said.

Purple Carrot’s donation and commitment comes amid ongoing worldwide protests against system racism, reignited after George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, was killed by Derek Chauvin and three other ex-police officers in Minneapolis on May 25. “The headlines we are all reading make it abundantly clear that as a country, our system has been broken,” Levitt said. “Whatever good Purple Carrot may be doing is clearly not enough. What is happening right now in our country is about the failure to reject racism and all that is so distasteful and disgraceful about it. The broader mission of Purple Carrot is to help people eat more plants. And while that may be inherently apolitical in nature, we have the opportunity to stand on the right side of this issue and express our support to our Black colleagues, partners, vendors, customers, and community.”

This week, several vegan brands made donations to social-justice organizations such as BLM, Black Visions Collective, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), including vegan cheese brand Miyoko’s Creamery and fast-food chain Plant Power Fast Food.
