Vancouver vegan eatery “What’s Up? Hot Dog!” recently added a Nashville Hot “Fricken” Sandwich to its menu. This vegan version of the iconic Nashville-style sandwich features a seitan-based patty made with vital wheat gluten and nutritional yeast. The patty is fried until crisp on the outside and topped with shredded lettuce, bread-and-butter pickles, housemade Sriracha mayo, and served on a fresh potato bun. The item—which is served with a side of French fries—is famous for its sizzling hot sauce and spice blend that packs a serious punch. “Our Vegan Nashville Hot “Fricken” Sandwich came about as the result of two different things,” What’s Up owner Matthew Hagarty told VegNews. “The first being my visit to the birthplace of Nashville hot chicken, Prince’s Hot Chicken, on my honeymoon in 2014. The second being that at What’s Up? our favorite thing to do is figure out the best vegan versions of our favorite meat dishes. The Nashville hot craze is at a fever pitch right now, but I hadn’t seen a vegan version.  We worked for a good month to make the best one we could, and it is perfect.”
