Simple Vegan Apple Tarte Tartin

This buttery, country-style dessert looks like a work of art, but is deceptively simple to make with the help of ready-made vegan puff pastry.

For serving this rustic, sugary sweet dessert from The Vegan Baking Bible cookbook, the puff pastry tart is turned upside down, to show off the beautiful caramelized fruits with a golden-brown puff pastry base.

What you need:

2 tablespoons sugar
⅓ cup vegan butter
¼ teaspoon salt
5 apples, peeled and cored, cut into thick slices
1 (12-ounce) package puff pastry

What you do:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In an oven-safe frying pan over medium-low heat, heat sugar until melted and caramelized slightly, being careful not to burn. Remove from heat and add butter, salt, and apples, place back over heat and let cook for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from heat.
  2. Cover with puff pastry and fold edges in towards apples. Cut a small cross in center of puff pastry. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until puff pastry has risen. Remove from oven and carefully invert onto a plate. Serve warm.
