A man from Bennington, VT was recently issued a two-year probation sentence for creating fraudulent US Department of Agriculture labels when he bought chickens from a third party and sold them at New York City Greenmarkets as free range, farm raised, and organic. According to the Bennington Banner, the guilty party claimed that around 2010 a flood killed 1,000 of his chickens and he was forced to take desperate measures. The Vermont man supposedly bought the chicken meat from a third party for $1,200 and was able to up-sell it for nearly a $4,000 profit with the false labels.
