This week, retail chain Walmart pledged to stop selling live fish at its stores. The move comes after animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) exposed the conditions under which live fish are kept at retail stores such as Walmart and Petco, where fish are stacked in plastic containers on shelves alongside already dead fish, and often disposed of when still alive into toilets or trash bags that cause them to slowly suffocate. “Walmart’s decision will spare countless sensitive, vulnerable fish immense suffering and miserable, lonely deaths,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said. “Walmart has wisely stopped tormenting fish and horrifying its customers, and PETA is calling on Petco and other businesses still selling living, breathing beings as merchandise to follow suit.” As a token of appreciation, PETA is sending a box of vegan fish-shaped chocolates to Walmart headquarters.
