On October 31, animal advocate and high-end fashion and sportswear designer Stella McCartney was awarded the title of British Designer of the Year at the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards. The vegetarian designer, who opts out of using animal leather in favor of vegan alternatives, recently designed Great Britain’s athletic team gear for the 2012 Olympics, and has an existing line of sportswear for Adidas. McCartney made headlines in July for establishing a scholarship for animal-friendly fashion students and announcing plans for an eco-friendly, affordably priced-lingerie collection. The designer has become recognized for proving high-end and popular fashion can be ethically sourced.
