NFL reporter Erin Andrews recently broke the internet—and all it took was a faux fur jacket. Andrews’ fashion statement caught the attention of social media, and even People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals applauded the reporter’s cruelty-free style.
Andrews’ viral moment is a reminder that ethical fashion can be bold, fun, and is always en vogue. Thankfully, there is an endless assortment of fur-free coats designed to keep you warm while adding serious style to your cold-weather wardrobe. Read on for our favorite faux-fur coats (including Andrews’ headline-making coat).
But before we get to that, let’s take a closer look at the fur industry, and why real is out and faux is in.
Is fur still fashionable?
Fur used to be a fashion week staple. But in recent years, brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, Gucci, Prada, Canada Goose, and Versace, plus major retailers Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, and Nordstrom, have denounced the fabric once and for all.
Even Kopenhagen Fur, the largest fur auction house in the world, announced it was closing in 2020. And in 2021, the popular fashion magazine ELLE committed to banning fur from its 45 print editions and 46 websites.
In 2025, Condé Nast, the publisher of Vogue, Glamour, Allure, and Vanity Fair, also announced it was going fur-free.

All of this, alongside several fur farming bans around the world, has had a major impact on the market. Today, the industry is firmly in decline.
Per Humane World for Animals, the number of animals used in the fur industry declined by 85 percent between 2014 and 2024.
In October 2023, the European Parliament also began examining a petition with more than 1.5 million signatures from the Fur Free Europe European Citizens Initiative calling for a near-total ban on fur in the EU. According to the European Commission, it is aiming to decide whether a ban proposal is appropriate by March 2026.
The best faux fur coats to wear this winter
Faux fur coats are warm, cozy, stylish, and available in abundance. Without further ado, here are some of our top picks.
1 Auter Fox Jacket in Smoke Noir
If you caught Andrews on the sidelines during the San Francisco 49ers vs. Philadelphia Eagles playoff game on January 11, there’s a good chance the fashion stole your focus. The NFL reporter stepped out in a dramatic, oversized fur coat that quickly went viral. “I knew when my stylist, Daniela Romero, suggested it that it was outside the box and super fun,” Andrews told People. The best part? The statement coat is completely faux, meaning you can recreate the look yourself. Choose Sand Noir like Andrews, or opt for the slightly deeper Smoke Noir for a moodier take.
