Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has released a proposal to gather support from cancer organizations such as the American Cancer Society, President’s Cancer Panel, and National Cancer Institute to advocate for the US Department of Agriculture to ban cancer-causing processed meat from the National School Lunch Program. In the proposal, PCRM states, “School districts who remove processed meats from their menu or begin to phase them out will receive supplemental commodity assistance, which can be used to purchase additional plant-based foods through the USDA commodities program,” and additionally says that schools that refuse to phase out processed meat will not receive the same funding. PCRM hopes to push the proposal forward and help decrease childhood obesity as well as reduce cancer rates.
