A group of Swedish graduate students in the Masters of Food Innovation and Product Design program at Lund University devised a way to redirect the 40 percent of fruit waste globally to developing countries as a nutritionally dense food source. Called FoPo Food Powder, the non-perishable food source is created by freeze-drying and pulverizing aging fruit into a powder that ships easily, and will keep for two years without refrigeration. The students “see food waste as an opportunity to create something more useful to solve world hunger.” After being successfully funded on Kickstarter, the group’s pilot program will deliver food to areas impacted by natural disasters in the Philippines. The students plan to expand to other populations in need by working with the United Nation’s Initiative on Food Loss and Waste to partner with NGOs, food retailers, and farmers.
